Wewoka wins rivalry clash 33-12

Body
Fans never know what to expect when the Wewoka Tigers and the Holdenville Wolverines square off in their annual rivalry football game. A normal expectation based on the premise that Wewoka dominated the 2019 game by a score of 52-12 would be that the Tigers would run all over the Wolverines. This would be the normal expectation since both teams had most of their players returning. Wewoka went deep into the 2019 play-offs and is ranked as high as 5 in their class. Last year was really a down year for the Wolverines and Holdenville finished the 2019 season winless.
Holdenville running back # 4, Christian Zambrano, clears the way for # 5, Cy Tiger, as Holdenville quarterback # 2, Matt Cox, looks on. Wewoka defeated the Wolverines in a hard fought season opener.

The Tigers have been able to hold regular practices and has had two scrimmages. This is could be an advantage when the teams kick-off their regular season schedules on Friday.

Haylie Turner following in Dad’s footsteps

Body
Haylie Turner was one of the top finishers in the Elementary Division of the Wolverine Invitational Cross-Country Meet. It’s too early to determine if Haylie will be the same caliber runner as her dad but the youngster is showing some promise. One thing that stood out at the cross-country meet was how excited Haylie was to have her picture taken with her Dad, Ryan Turner. Haylie will be one to watch develop over the next few years because Ryan was the top runner in the state when he was a senior at Holdenville High.
A Holdenville track and cross-country coach, Ryan Turner, and his daughter, Haylie, posed for a picture prior to Haylie’s first cross country race of the 2020 season. Ryan was a state champion during his Wolverine running days and now its Haylie’s turn.

Leslie Curtis Phillips and daughters Leigha and Laynee

Body
There’s been some great teams in the history of Holdenville High School athletics and the Wolverine state championship track team of 1995 ranks near the top. Leslie (Curtis) Phillips was a member of that team. Leslie was a senior when her relay teams won three gold medals and she secured a second-place silver medal in the long jump. Leslie’s jump of 17 feet 2 inches was and is certainly remarkable. Leslie ran the third leg on the Wolverine 4 x 200 relay team that set the state record at 1:44. The performance was so remarkable that the time stood as the state record for 18 years.
Leslie Curtis Phillips was a state champion her senior year and now her twin daughters Leigha and Laynee are working to take their turn on the victory podium at the state track meet.
