THE FIRST MIRACLE I EVER SAW

Body
Lewis Gizzard often wrote about growing up in a little Methodist church in Georgia and how precious it was to him in his childhood. Once, he said they had a couple of rowdy brothers in town who were the town juvenile offenders. They started coming to the youth group at the church. On the first night they went, they beat up two fifth graders and threw a hymnal at the lady who was the youth leader. She ducked just in time. She looked them squarely in their devilish eyes. She said, soft as an angel: “I don’t approve of what you boys did here tonight and neither does Jesus. But if he can forgive you, I guess I’ll have to.” She handed them a plate of cookies. Grizzard said: “And the last I heard—both those boys grew up and they’re daddies now with steady jobs and they rarely miss a Sunday at church. That was the first miracle I ever saw.” Miracles happen in places of love, acceptance and forgiveness.

Growing to Maturity by Alfred Stevenson

Body
On September 17 and 18, 1909, the first Hughes County Fair was held in Holdenville. The livestock and other outdoor displays were shown in Mc Donald’s Wagon yard, and the indoor displays were set up ion an empty warehouse across the Rock Island tracks. There were many categories, with cash prizes given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Largest prize was $10. There were a lot of pigs, cattle and horses shown, but very little poultry. Cooking awards were given for cakes, bread, fancy pastries, butter, jams and jelly, canned fruit and other canned garden produce. The cooking events had some categories for cooks who were under 16 years of age. There were pulling contests for horses, and a number of athletic events for people. Two popular events were the “Ugliest Man and Prettiest Baby” contests. Jack Peace won the former, and Mr. and Mrs. Minton had the prettiest baby. The Fair Officials said it was quite successful, even though there was very little time to prepare and advertise. “Next year it will be a big event,” they said.
