Wolverine’s sport week marred by Covid

Body
Holdenville High School has three sports seasons going at the present and two of the three were put out of action this past week by the Covid virus. The football scrimmage at Gore was cancelled and the cross country team was unable to compete at Kiefer. The one team who was able to compete was the softball team and they had a good week. Coach Rick Scott’s softball bunch played 7 games and won 5 of the 7.

Wolverine Softball team posts a 5 win week.

Body
The Wolverines softball team started the season with three losses but Coach Scott’s team has definitely had a turn around. The Wolverines started the week with back to back wins over Beggs. Holdenville defeated the Demons 12-0 on Monday and 12-1 on Tuesday. Holdenville won the first round of the 66 Conference Tournament with a 12-2 win over Meeker and then took on the highly ranked Chandler Lions in the second round. The Lions came out on top 0-8 and sent the Wolverines into the losers bracket. Holdenville battled back with an 8-7 victory over Prague and an 8-3 win over Seminole. The back-to-back wins set up a rematch with Chandler and this time the Lions sent the Wolverines home by a score of 10-0.

What’s next

Body
Holdenville will host Henryetta on Monday. The Wolverines will travel to Henryetta for a rematch on Tuesday. Allen comes to town for a Hughes County show down on Thursday. The games with Henryetta are district games and the contest with Allen is just an old fashion county showdown.

Football season opener at Wewoka

Body
The Holdenville Wolverine football squad will make the 6 mile trip west on Friday and open the 2021 season with a classic match up with the Wewoka Tigers. The Wolverine vs. Tiger contest has been going on for decades with very few exceptions. There were years when the outcome of the rivalry game determined district championships. There was a year back in the mid-20th century when Wewoka won the state championship and Holdenville was the Tigers toughest game.
