OKLAHOMA CITY — State leaders say they’re still pursuing solutions to reverse a yearslong decline in traditionally trained teachers entering the classroom, all while emergency certified educators continue to fill es-sential teaching roles.

The Holdenville City Council declined to act Tuesday on a proposed interlocal agreement that would allow cross-commissioning between the Holdenville Police De-partment and Hughes County Sheriff’s Office.

Holdenville’s lake generated nearly $59,000 in revenue during the past fiscal year, continuing a trend of steady growth, according to Lake Superintendent and Cemetery Sexton Waylon Ford.

Holdenville Head Coach, David Barker, summed up his thoughts on the first week of practice as “cautiously excited”. Barker had this to say about the first week: “We have a lot of experience on both sides of the ball. The positives of that are obvious.

Holdenville City Manager Teresa Barkhimer updated council members last month on several ongoing projects, including new surveil-lance cameras installed throughout the city, a potential expansion of the camera system and continued efforts to attract new business to Holdenville.

A discussion over hundreds of acres of city-owned property purchased for Holdenville’s once-planned lake project ended without action last month after council members expressed differing opinions on whether the city should further investigate or eventually dispose of the land.

State offices in Oklahoma are determined in the non-presidential election years. The June 16 primary left five races going to a runoff in the August 25 election – four Republican and one Democrat runoffs.
