Sammie was born July 29, 1942 in Atwood, Oklahoma to Gus “Toots” Dean Mathis and Eupha Glee (Chaffin) Mathis. He graduated from Calvin Public School. Sammie married Francine Casstevens in Pampa, Texas. He was a rancher. Sammie was a member of the Atwood Church of the Nazarene. He was the Foreman at Maywood Manufacturing in Amarillo, Texas for 36 years. Sammie worked at The Store in Calvin for over 20 years, Hot Shot driver for Sundowner, and drove for Call-A-Ride. He enjoyed buying and selling real estate and spending time with his family and friends. Sam, the man would slip in a sly quiet remark to bring a smile to all of us. He was always a hard worker. Sometimes holding down three jobs so that his family would never want for anything. He never missed a day’s work. He hated retirement and was always looking for a job for his wife... (one of his many jokes). He brought broken families together and they became one large loving family.

He is survived by his wife Francine of the home, children; Mitchell Dean Mathis and wife Megg of Amarillo, TX, Sheri West and husband Roger of Amarillo, TX, Frank Gibbs and wife Shirley of Amarillo, TX, Michele Tupin of Atwood, OK, Danny Mathis of Amarillo, TX, 12 grandchildren; silbings; Ben Mathis of Calvin, Joel Mathis and wife Debbie of Calvin, Pete Mathis and wife Dena of Eufaula and Marsha Mathis of Atwood, OK.
