Today’s News Dedicated to WWII Veteran H.B. Jones

Body
Our longtime friend, H.B. Jones of Calvin may be the last WWII Veteran in Hughes County. He served in Fleet Air Wing 1 of the United States Navy, seeing action in the South Pacific. In my visit with H.B., he told me when he joined the service, they said they couldn’t accept him without his full name. He told them that H.B. was the only name he ever knew so they put quotes around “H” “B” and accepted him. His mom and dad, Hester and Mary lived in the Blue Ridge community outside of Calvin. Hester was a WWI Veteran. H.B. has a framed copy of a letter sent to him by President Harry Truman which reads as follows:
H. B. JONES
