SEPTEMBER 19TH 1796: George Washington’s Farewell Address is printed throughout the US. The address was written by Washington toward the end of his second term as President. Directed to his ‘friends and fellow-citizens,’ it argued for democratic republicanism and called for national unity. Washington asked the people to forgive any mistakes he may have made during his tenure, and closed by saying he was excited to become a private citizen after decades of public service.
