HOLDENVILLE PUBLIC WORKS AUTHORITY GRAPPLES WITH UNUSED BOND FUNDS

Body
HOLDENVILLE,OK— The lake project, which has tied up the City of Holdenville’s business for the past 18 years, has officially come to an end, according to bond attorney and underwriter, Randy Nelson. Mr. Nelson came with some of his colleagues to share the grim news with the City Council and public last Monday at the Holdenville Public Library. Although, Mr. Nelson says, it’s not all doom and gloom, there is a silver lining. (What is a “revenue bond”, See Page 7) This project, birthed under the Jack Barrett mayoral administration in 2005, was originally proposed and voted on by the public as an $8 million project to connect the old lake with the new lake, this to be paid for with a 1¢ sales tax (which is still being collected today). It quickly became evident that this tax would not come near paying for such a project. The project was tied up in litigation for years, costing the city even more money than initially expected.
