I haven’t had a real vacation in years so you can imagine how much I enjoyed a couple of days as guests of the Manek family as we took in the College Basketball Playoffs in Fort Worth. After four years at OU, Brady is finishing his college career in the basketball-rich tradition at North Carolina.

“Religion and politics don’t mix.” I have been told that many, many times. Friend and enemy alike have argued the point.

I was not going to write a story about Joe’s trip to Poland but well, maybe a little bit. President Biden loaded up on AF-1 last weekend, the big 747 the taxpayers provide for our presidents as they scoot around the country and yes, the world.

I first met my little sister Sue on a bright pretty September day in Centrahoma. The day was perfect and pretty. My mom surprised me that morning when she told me to go play with my best friend Letha Mae who lived just down the street. I thought it a sort of strange but happy day for me and then, after we had spent the day just playing, her mom told me something strange: “You can go home now and meet your new sister!” I knew of no sister but being four, I was used to strange events.

I want to commend council members Lynn Lantz, Julie West and Ron Wiseman for their support in appointing a transition team that will work to make the change from Aldermanic to City Manager in the coming months. To wait until the last minute would be a disaster and we are thankful for their vision. These three have proven they are more interested in the future of Holdenville than they are in petty politics. My understanding is that almost one half of the city code will need to be re-written. Council members working for the best interest of this city and refusing to be intimidated by the handful of critics are what we need. The three mentioned stood by their convictions and we applaud them. Council members Lori Babb and Jeanna Gordon were unable to be there. Council members Orr and Wulf voted against the transition team.

Can COVID-19 Cause Shingles? Dear Savvy Senior, How effective is the shingles vaccine and what is the CDC recommendation for getting it? My older brother and sister, both in their fifties, got COVID a few months back followed by shingles. Do you know if there is a connection between these viruses, and would the shingles vaccine have protected them? Scared of Shingles Dear Scared, Great question! Many healthcare professionals across the country have been urging their older patients to get the shingles vaccine (in addition to the COVID-19 vaccinations) during the pandemic because getting COVID-19 can increase your chances of developing shingles.

I’m so old I remember a world before cell phones. A world where, if you were away from home and needed to make a call, you used an ancient invention called the “pay phone.” I’m so old that when I was a kid I used to check the coin return on pay phones as I passed by, hoping I might find a forgotten dime.
