FAITH & FEASTING WRITTEN BOLDLY IN U.S. HISTORY

The Thanksgiving feast—an American tradition that dates back to the 16th century when Spanish settlers held a feast of gratitude for God’s providence as they successfully arrived in what is now Florida. Then in 1620, a large group of Puritans, who fled the religious persecution of early 17th century England, to then eventually end up on our shores. We’re all familiar with this story, as we have learned about the Pilgrims from our earliest school days.

I know that we have way too many holidays, no matter what the school kids say as they recuperate from Fall Break, look ahead to Thanksgiving and fully chill out with two weeks off during the Christmas holidays. But the wise people (joke!) who run our Country in Washington are missing the boat.

Dane and I had the privilege of speaking at the homegoing service of Marie Friend Roberts. She was a dear friend and a graduate of HHS. Her husband, the late Woody Roberts, was the most decorated WWII Veteran I have ever known. He flew 55 missions, including D-Day over Norman- death. At the service, I visited with HHS graduate Eddie Puckett. I had not seen him in years. He is the son of the late Jerald and Lorene Puckett. Jerald had Puckett Grocery Store on Main Street for many years and his wife had the most popular daycare center in Holdenville.

Even though the work trip had also afforded us a fun chance to visit some cousins who live in the areas where we had gone, it still meant days of driving for long hours, eating at restaurants and fast-food chains, and attempting to catch a nap while the other one drove.

by Brian Hobbs, Baptist Messenger In terms of public opinion polls, survey data seems to indicate increasing acceptance of homosexuality and its related LGBTQ issues. For example, an NBC News Poll asked “do you favor… allowing gay and lesbian couples to enter into same-sex marriages?” The poll showed in 2004 only 30 percent of the American public favored that.

324 Word Limit When I wrote a column for a large circulation newspaper I was told, after writing columns for several years, there was a new 324 word limit. I thought “I’m not sure I can say much in 300 words!” But then I thought about my boyhood hero, Abraham Lincoln, and his famous Gettysburg Address: 270 memorable and impactful words.
