CITY COUNCIL DEBATES ANIMAL CONTROL CHALLENGES AMID OVERPOPULATION CRISIS

At the recent Holdenville City Council meeting, tensions arose as the growing issue of stray and unwanted dogs took center stage. Councilwoman Lori Babb sparked the discussion with a pointed question aimed at the city’s Animal Control Officer (ACO): “Can our dog catcher catch a dog?” Her comment drew a swift defense from Chief of Police Jason Scroggins, who oversees animal control efforts in the city.

In a special meeting held to address the vacancy in the Ward 2 City Council seat, the Holdenville City Council faced a critical decision: appoint a new council member or hold a special election. The seat was left vacant by the recent resignation of Tony Wulf, and the council was under a 60-day deadline to make a decision.

This column will offend many dog lovers. Please accept my apologies in advance. I myself am a dog lover. I believe dogs are among the very best creations on Earth. Fewer things provide more pleasure than a loving relationship with a well-trained and well-behaved dog. But, the hardest part of training dogs is training their human masters.

CYNTHA GILKES AYRES ORDAINED AS BI-VOCATIONAL PRIEST AT ST. PAUL’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

On August 15, 2024, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Holdenville celebrated a momentous occasion as Cyntha Gilkes Ayres was ordained as a bi-vocational priest by Bishop Paulson Reed of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. The ordination ceremony was a deeply spiritual event, filled with the reverence and tradition of the Episcopal Church, marking a significant milestone in Vicar Ayres’ lifelong journey of faith.
THE OKLAHOMA BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION IS INVESTIGATING A SUSPICIOUS DEATH IN HOLDENVILLE. According to Police Chief Jason Scroggins, the OBI has opened an investigation into a suspicious death on 11th Street in Holdenville. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this point. If you have any information regarding this matter please call the Holdenville Police Department at 405-379-6627.

Softball Team Falls in Extra Innings The Holdenville Wolverine fast pitch softball team played their best game of the year on Friday and lost to an extremely good Little Axe team in extra innings.Holdenville trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. Autumn Jackson started the rally with a base hit to center field.
The Holdenville Middle School Girls’ Cross Country team was all lined up and ready to run at Holdenville Lake. The girls raced one mile. Team members are:Left to Right: Autumn Doane, Lilly Leftwich, McKenzie Foster, Lainey McMinn, Maylee Barnett, Miracle Parish, Hailey Mcculley, Makaya Aguilar, and Sheleigh Fixico.

HOLDENVILLE HOSPITAL CEO TALKS RECENT IMPROVEMENTS AND UPGRADES

At the August 20th Holdenville City Council meeting, Holdenville General Hospital (HGH) CEO Steve Stewart presented a positive outlook on the hospital’s recent developments, despite ongoing financial challenges. While the hospital recorded a financial loss in July, Stewart noted that the loss was smaller than expected and an improvement compared to the same period last year.
