As Memorial Day rolls around, I am reminded of a story that I heard. Though the exactness of it I cannot confirm, I am assured its basis is quite factual, and it’s message definitely deserves to be retold. The story is of a man, Andrew, who was known all his life for selfless sacrifice and good works. He always stood in defense of the defenseless, and toiled without tiring, standing up for the downtrodden and underprivileged. As he grew old, and people tried to honor him for his well-lived life of service, he was reluctant to accept the praise and attention that his community desired to heap upon him. It was then, for the first time, that he told a story that had burned deep in his heart and was hard for him to relate. Andrew was a young man, thirteen years old and living in Austria, when the Germans invaded. The Austrians, brave and proud, decided to fight back. In the town where Andrew lived, the men and teenage boys organized and destroyed a power plant that the Germans relied on to continue their war effort. The men and boys all knew this would cause great hardship on themselves as well, for they also relied on the power from the plant. But the thing they had not counted on was the swift and severe retribution that would come from the Nazi invaders.

Holdenville graduate, Sterlin Harjo returned to his hometown last Friday night to deliver, what is being talked about as the most memorable graduation speech in modern history. Harjo, who has made a name for himself across the country as a wildly successful television and film director and producer, paid homage to the town, he says made him who he is today.

HHS ATHLETES INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME.

Four members of the 2024 senior class have earned the right to be added to the Holdenville High School Athletic Hall of Fame ( HOF ). All four athletes have met the criteria that has been established by the school that sets the guidelines for the honor of being added to this elite group of athletes. Now, these four can attest that they have earned the honor of being the best of the best that have ever put on an athletic uniform of a Holdenville Wolverine.

I remember the day well. It was one of those times when everything goes right. I took a shower and fixed my hair. It went just the way I wanted it to, as it so seldom does. I pulled on my new pink sweater, giving me added color, since I need all the help I can get. I pulled on my gray slacks and my taupe heels.

We all have seen it. Mobs of young people, some who are “actual” college and university students — wearing those “Yassar Arafat” head scarves, burning the flag of the United States and shouting “Death to Israel.” Where has all this Jewish race hatred come from? Who is Hama? Why do they all hate Jews and Israel?
