Some Moms Resist Change

Body
One of the more popular expressions knocked around by people in my age group (OLD!!) is “used to be.” That is certainly true of our mothers, past and present. This little jewel was forwarded to me by the lovely and talented Starla Dawn Smith, former band director and music teacher who now has joined the ranks of retired teachers looking for means of subsidizing our meager teacher retirement check.

Marijuana in Stonewall

Body
It was a warm soft summer night in 1947 and I was walking home. I saw 5 of my peers sitting in front of the Main Café. Just sitting there. Their feet somewhat appropriately in the gutter. I detoured and joined them. I noticed one thing different though. There was a brand-new Cadillac parked right in front of the café. The conversation was, uh, well I don’t remember except we talked about the new car. New cars weren’t common in 1947 — right after the war — but there sat this one. Its door swung open and the driver came over and stood in front of our group of 12 and 13 year old boys. Most of us had taken up smoking cigarettes. And some of us were smoking. Or trying to.

Oklahoma Ranks 24th in Cost of Smoking

Body
Smoking doesn’t just ruin your health. It can also burn a nasty hole through your wallet. Tobacco use accounts for nearly half a million deaths in the U.S. each year and is the leading cause of lung cancer, according to the American Lung Association. Smokers also may have an increased risk of severe symptoms from COVID-19. In addition, even those around tobacco smokers aren’t safe from its harmful effects. Since 1964, smokingrelated illnesses have claimed over 20 million lives in the U.S., 2.5 million of which belonged to nonsmokers who developed diseases merely from secondhand-smoke exposure.
