Christmas as it was in Holdenville many years ago...Reprinted from Holdenville Democrat, 1921 Christmas will soon be here. As I see the beautifully decorated windows and the hurrying, scurrying crowds on our streets I cannot help but think of my first Christmas spent in Holdenville, twenty five years ago.

HUGHES COUNTY ASSESSOR RESIGNS

HUGHES COUNTY — Hughes County Assessor Amber Jones resigned from office this week.The Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) and the State Auditor & Inspector’s Office formalized a recommendation declaring the assessor’s office in Category 3 Noncompliance, the most serious compliance designation available under state law. Her resignation was formally received and accepted by the Hughes County Board of Commissioners during a special meeting Tuesday morning.
END OF AN ERA... Chuck Simmons retires as administrator of Heritage Village Nursing Center. Chuck has been a beloved part of the nursing home for forty years. We wish him the very best in his retirement. Chuck is pictured above with his family: Son, Nick, Mother Mae, wife Donna, Son Lucas, and Son Kyle.

Ernest Hemingway Few people today know the name of one of the most remarkable Americans ever to live. She was an intrepid journalist, gifted writer, and popular TV personality. The New York Post once described her as “the most powerful female voice in America.” As a fearless crime reporter, she was involved in many high-profile investigations, including the famous Sam Sheppard murder trial and the JFK assassination. In November of 1965, she died mysteriously, but authorities refused to investigate. Her name was Dorothy Kilgallen.

Description: Male, approximately 3-4 years of age, was located at 135 rd and 374 rd when caught. Animal was reported on 11/19/2025. Property owners in the area reported that the animal has been loose for approximately 1 week and no one in the area claimed ownership prior to reporting to the Sheriff’s Office. To claim animal must bring proof of ownership to the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office at 201 N Broadway Holdenville, Ok 74848. Failure to claim will result in the sale of the animal after a two-week holding period per Oklahoma State Statute 4-4-85.6. Thank you, Hughes County Sheriff Trever Teague

Candidate filing for the Board of Education begins on Monday, December 1st for Hughes County school districts. Those who wish to file for a Board of Education office must submit a Declaration of Candidacy to the Hughes County Election Board December 1st, 2nd or 3rd , between the hours of 8 a.m.
