Former Hughes Countian Cecil Hood Honored

American Legion Post 204 is flying a burial flag the month of April in honor of a fallen soldier who also served as a lawman in Hughes County. This month’s flag, which is being flown in Seminole’s Veterans Park, honors Cecil Hood, who passed away in May 2020 at the age of 78.

The City of Holdenville is extremely grateful for the generous donation of $250,000 from the estate of Ivan and Viola Rowe to the Holdenville Cemetery. Mayor John Massad stated during the October 20, 2020 City Council meeting that the City originally learned about this potential contribution in June of 2020, although it took time for the legalities to be settled.

The Supreme Court’s McGirt Dilemma

Count on Justice Samuel Alito to subtly elbow an errant colleague from across the mahogany bench. On Wednesday the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta. The state of Oklahoma wants the Justices to say it has inherent sovereign power to prosecute non-Native Americans who harm Natives within reservation boundaries.
