1764: St. Louis is founded. French fur traders Pierre Laclede and Auguste Choteau were commissioned to build a trading post near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers by a New Orleans merchant. There, they built a fur trade with Native tribes living along the Missouri River.
