These are times when statistics can be startling and bring clarity to an underlying problem. Recently, a U.S. Federal Reserve study revealed that half of Americans spend more than they earn. 25% cannot pay all of their regular bills each month, and half of Americans cannot come up with $400 in cash to cover an emergency. Ironically, these statistics come from the Federal government made up of leaders in Congress who don’t seem to be able to balance a budget or pay our commitments within the revenue they bring in.

Now that I am an 86-year-old person I am reminded anew almost every day about how forgetful old people are. But as I look back on my somewhat lackluster life I have to remind myself that my old age isn’t wholly responsible for my absentmindedness. I had a little bit of this even as a child. I remember overhearing my grandpa remark and sharing his concern with my mother about how forgetful I was, and this was when I was 6. Just last week I had to ask a young guy what his name is. A boy I knew quite well. I have often tried to cover this memory deficiency with saying things like, “oh he has a beard now.” But this guy didn’t. Sorry Dillon. So, I’ll just blame it on old age again, for now. And that works pretty well.

I had a great visit with HHS graduate Mary Ellen Ewing Wall last week. She is a dear friend and so much fun to visit with. Her late husband, Newt, owned Wall’s Family Bargain Centers. He was an outstanding football player for the Wolverines and actually began his love for business when he opened Newt’s Drive-In in Holdenville while he was in high school. It was located where LaValley’s Eye Center is now and was a popular gathering place for HHS students. He also served in the Korean War. Newt’s father owned a grocery store where the Dollar General Store is now located. Newt and Mary Ellen were very active in our school reunions. Mary Ellen and I discussed how much we miss the gatherings. She lives in Shawnee and attends the same church that our son Tim and his family attend, Immanuel Baptist Church. I really enjoyed our visit…Bill and Loyce Muse are not only our friends and neighbors, but also, two of the finest Christians I have ever known. I was visiting with
