1996: Taliban soldiers captured Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The Sunni Islamic fundamentalist army executed Mohammad Najibulla, the last Communist president ofAfghanistan, and assumed power. They ruled until the USS invasion of 2001, but continued a guerilla war for years after.
