Wolverine Softball Team split games in opening week
The first week of softball season was indicative of the circumstances of 2020. The Wolverines were supposed to open the season at McAlester on Monday but one of the Buffalo players came down with the Covid-19 virus and the game was cancelled. Tuesday’s game was played at Holdenville with all of the team members on both the Wolverine side and Valliant side wearing face masks in the dugout. There was also a rule about each team taking a respective game ball to the dugout when it was their turn to bat so there was control of who was able to touch the game ball. One game ball was only touched by Holdenville players and one was restricted to being touched by Valliant players.
Holdenville lost to Valiant on Tuesday by a score of 9-7 and came back to whip the Wewoka Tigers 13-2 on Thursday.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against the Bulldogs but Valliant was able to bounce back and tie the score at 2-2 in the third. The Wolverine defense was a bit rusty at first but according to Holdenville Head Coach, Sarah Morgan, some of the young Wolverine players were forced to grow up in a hurry.
Coach Morgan stated she was proud of Brooklyn Brown’s play in the last inning. Brown got a late game rally going in the last inning and Rylie Hill chased her home with a triple. The rally was too little too late, and Valliant was able to load the bus with a victory.
Holdenville’s starting pitcher, Cheyenne Fixico, connected with a long ball in the fifth and stroked a threerun homer over the left field fence.
Holdenville’s game at Wewoka was much different. The Wolverines dominated from the opening pitch and opened a 12- run lead before the Tigers were able to get a run across the plate.
The Wolverines were outstanding at the plate. Holdenville catcher, Stevie Huff, had an inside the park home run, Bell McFarland and Jessica Moore both had triples and Bailee Black connected for two doubles.
What’s next:
The Wolverines have a busy week ahead. Holdenville is scheduled to play at Byng on Monday, Idabel on Tuesday and have two games scheduled in the Red Devil Classic at Prague on Thursday. All of these contests are contingent on all of the players on each team being Covid virus free.
