Holdenville Wolverine long jumper, Eddie Jennings, proudly displays the first place medal he won at the state championship track meet! Eddie leaped 21 feet 7 1/2 inches to become the state champion! Blakeli Whiteman leaped 15 feet and 10 inches to earn the 6th place medal at the state track meet at Western Heights.Blakeli enjoyed a proud moment on the medal stand before posing for a picture with her medal. Holdenville High School had 5 athletes that placed high enough in the regional track meet to qualify for state! Eddie Jennings,Malachi Henderson, Blakeli Whiteman, Cy Tiger and Iazaiah King all competed at the state championship track meet at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City!.

Winning! There’s something really unique about standing on the awards stand at the state track meet! Athletes who have earned the honor of having someone place a lanyard around their neck with a state medal attached will tell you it’s one of the best if not the best feelings of winning you could possibly experience! Eddie Jennings and Blakeli Whiteman earned the right to have that thrill this past week at the state track meet at Western Heights. Both athletes stepped on the podium in front of a home stand filled with cheering fans and experienced the thrill of an athletic lifetime! Blakeli finished 6th and Eddie stood on the highest level as their state medals were placed around their neck.

Former Hughes Countian Cecil Hood Honored

American Legion Post 204 is flying a burial flag the month of April in honor of a fallen soldier who also served as a lawman in Hughes County. This month’s flag, which is being flown in Seminole’s Veterans Park, honors Cecil Hood, who passed away in May 2020 at the age of 78.

The City of Holdenville is extremely grateful for the generous donation of $250,000 from the estate of Ivan and Viola Rowe to the Holdenville Cemetery. Mayor John Massad stated during the October 20, 2020 City Council meeting that the City originally learned about this potential contribution in June of 2020, although it took time for the legalities to be settled.

The Supreme Court’s McGirt Dilemma

Count on Justice Samuel Alito to subtly elbow an errant colleague from across the mahogany bench. On Wednesday the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta. The state of Oklahoma wants the Justices to say it has inherent sovereign power to prosecute non-Native Americans who harm Natives within reservation boundaries.
