It’s the season. Live with it. This little ditty was handed to me years ago. Wish I had thought of it. Exchanging gifts, while fun in theory, offers endless potential for aggravation: Thronging crowds, ransacked stores, confusion, indecision, cash depletion and, finally, the belated knowledge that you bought the wrong thing.
Lost Claus: The Lost Tradition of Sending Christmas Cards

When I was growing up, more years ago than I care to share, Christmas cards were as much a part of the holiday celebration as the ornaments on the tree. Every afternoon in the weeks leading up to December 25, the mailman, his leather bag full to bursting, would deposit a batch of hand-addressed envelopes into the mailbox. There would be colorful cards from aunts, uncles, cousins, assorted distant relatives, friends, neighbors, my dad’s Navy buddies from WWII.
Fire Chief Warns About Unauthorized Burning

Fire Chief Shelton Foster shared with us this week that there have been several unauthorized burns happening in town. He stated, “We have had several unauthorized burns. And we have begun giving citations out to the repeated offenders. As dry as it is now we cannot risk any fires that’s not approved. The wind and the humidity are big factors as dry as it is now. There are several burn bans in Western Oklahoma right now. And I Expect them to start moving this way if we don’t get some measurable precipitation soon. That of course is our last option, But it is an option. I just want everyone to check with us or pay attention to the weather before burning and most of all stay safe.” Please stay safe and follow the rules regarding burning in town and the surrounding areas.

Right to Vote for Chief of Police Restored to Citizens

In what can only be described as a win for the citizens of Holdenville, the city council in the December 7, 2021 meeting last Tuesday, in a close vote, restored the right of the people to vote for their chief of police. In a meeting held on November 20, 2018, the Holdenville city council amended ordinance 866, relating to elected officials. In the past, a town marshal was elected by a vote of the people and the city council then voted to appoint the town marshal as chief of police, under standing the two offices to be one and the same. The revised 866 ordinance redefined the duties of town marshal to be, “1. Attend meetings of the City Council and assist in the maintenance of order among the attendees., 2. Head up all parades organized by the City, 3. Organize, or direct others to organize, and coordinate traffic control for funeral processions, and 4. Have such other powers and duties as may be prescribed by law or ordinance.”

Well, here it is about Christmas time again and you can shore tell it by looking at the decorations that are going up all over the plant. The cafeteria is decorated prettily and soon now the big tree that Carl Stanford gave us will be loaded with presents.

Hi Bill, Dayna, I saw the picture in the paper of dad with the 1958 HHS Girls basketball team he coached. Thanks so much. I think that was his first year in Holdenville from Yeager. Anyway, he’s 96 and hanging in there. His memory is not what it used to be, but he still remembers Holdenville. You know we lost mom to Covid in January, and we really appreciate the graveside service Bill and Dane officiated. I’d like to ask you to let any of dad’s former students or players know that if they’d like to send dad a Christmas card they can send it to:
